Pelosi ultimatum shows US Democrat's 'backbone'
House of Representatives Democrats really did not expect the Justice Department to present their contempt citations against two of US President George W. Bush's top aides to a federal grand jury for prosecution. But the effort and having a civil lawsuit at the ready as a backup in their fight against the White House over the 2006 firings of nine federal prosecutors has satisfied, for now, some liberals who for a year have wanted much more: Bush's impeachment. Even before House Speaker Nancy Pelosi became the first woman to reach Congress' highest office, the California Democrat had rejected demands from many in her party for impeachment. Until two weeks ago, she had sat for seven months on the contempt citations sought by Democrats on the House Judiciary Committee against Bush's chief of staff, Josh Bolten, and his former counsel, Harriet Miers.
Adobe gives web, desktop development a breath of fresh AIR
There's something in the air, and this time, it's not from Apple. Adobe announced today the official 1.0 release of Adobe AIR, its technology for merging web and desktop application development, along with Flex 3, its open-source application development framework. With AIR and Flex, the company says that it is staying on top of the development of rich Internet applications (RIA) while enabling developers to create apps for both the Web and the desktop without having to create entirely new code for each. And, of course, the company is using AIR to help port its own applications over to the Web—such as Premiere and Photoshop—while maintaining a desktop userbase. Once the a migration is finished, it will be easier for Adobe to maintain its software both online and off while using the same codebase.
Bella Vita goes belly up
Originally, delays were related to construction bids coming in higher than expected. Then the project was held up by a complaint to the state Bureau of Labor and Industries against the developer and MURA for not providing the prevailing wage rate for a public project. BOLI ruled prevailing wage rates, which were higher than the developer was anticipating, must be paid. Coupled with the national downturn in the real estate market and the mortgage-lending crisis, the project just never got its footing again. Bella Vita was estimated to cost $25 million when it was unveiled in 2005. The three six-story buildings were to consist of about 64 residential units, 55,000 square feet of office space and 19,000 square feet of commercial space. Occupancy was originally planned for the first condominiums in September 2006.

Murray stuns Federer
Andy Murray claimed a remarkable three-set victory over world number one Roger Federer to progress to the second round of the Dubai Open. The British number one narrowly lost the first set 8-6 on a tie break but clinically took the first break point in the second set to break Federer's serve in the sixth game. Murray then broke Federer in the fifth game of the third set before he served out for a 6-7 (6/8) 6-3 6-4 win, his second straight victory over the Swiss having defeated him in Cincinnati in August 2006. Both players held serve in an entertaining first set but the world number one was able to break Murray twice during the tie break to win it 8-6. In the second set Murray led 3-2 and, after over an hour of the match, he was given his first opportunity to break the defending champion's serve at 30-40.
