Myth of BBC's 'made in Scotland'

Other programmes, including Film 2008 and the children's shows Raven: Secret Temple and Shoebox Zoo, are also classed as BBC Scotland productions, despite a tenuous connection. The practice of over-inflating the figures came in evidence to the Scottish Broadcasting Commission, which yesterday published "key points" from its inquiry so far. It said: "There is a practice of labelling some network programmes as 'Scottish productions' when there is very little financial or creative connection to Scotland."The producers' trade association, Pact, identified 18 programmes which it classed as London productions yet which had BBC regional offices credited in the end titles. The programmes, which are not filmed in Scotland and bring little financial benefit to the nation, often have only nominal involvement from BBC Scotland employees.

Musicians donate tunes to benefit bridge victims

In order to get the collection together quickly, artists were asked to donate a song already in the can. But one participant, Coon Rapids-based country singer Rockie Lynne, said he felt compelled to write an original song about the tragedy.

"Songwriting is like farming," Lynne said. "You can put in a lot of hard work, but you can't make it rain. With this song, it rained right away, probably because I was so saddened that a tragedy like that could take place right where I live."

The result, "The Chance to Say Goodbye," is the collection's lead-off track.

"Imagine going off to work and never coming home/ Kissing your family, then leaving them alone through no fault of your own," sings Lynne. He goes on to sing of specific victims, such as a delivery truck driver and a mother with her son.

That's the ballgame: Toshiba bows out of HD DVD

Many for example know the playstation name as a gaming console and one that has proven its worth over time. The idea of having it as a blu-ray player isn't that attractive to someone who has zero interesting in gaming. I doubt the thought would have even crossed their mind. What would a salesman say if someone said they were looking for a blu-ray player? Should they recommend a playstation? Surly not. They would offer the customer several solutions. I know you said yourself you are not a ps3 fanboy and I accept that because of the effort and sense you put into your post instead of bashing and throwing insults around. But that said there are those here that just preach PS3 PS3 PS3 and just cant understand there is more to blu-ray than their precious investment.

Letter to the editor/South: Century III Mall, Route 51 need help

You have got to be kidding me. ["Marketing manager says all is well at Century III Mall," letters, Jan. 24.]

This mall is dim, spotted with shops that are quite questionable, boarded up stores and a few of the originals. It has gone downhill before my very eyes.

It is a shame to let something like this die. Some incentive needs to be put out there for fresh, new stores to want to come to Century III Mall.

And as for the Route 51 stretch that is so run down, garbage stacked, we need to start caring about that area. I would be all for getting a group together to try to make some improvements there.

The Radio 1 DJ has monopolised the category in recent years, with NME readers consistently naming his show the finest around. Speaking to NME.COM, Lowe said he was touched by the continuing loyalty. “It gets more special every time," explained the DJ. “The first time we won it for our show it was very precious, but every year it comes around you just hope that you're still connecting with the NME readers and the new music that's out there. So this is great." He added he was pleased to receive the award from presenter Jon McClure from Reverend And The Makers. “It's always nice to receive anything, but it's always an awkward situation when you go up at these things," said Lowe. “It's always weird situation so it was great to get it from a friend."
