Open Mike: Tiger always a hot topic

He was the greatest golfer of his era and would become the greatest of any era. He saw that if he was going to accept all the good things that came with that, he also had to deal with the bad. It wasn't for him that he had to do it, but for the sport.

What Nicklaus didn't have that Tiger does is squadrons of promoters and agents buzzing around him, telling him that he's the best thing to happen to the game since gutta percha and that he doesn't have to talk to those vultures if he doesn't want to. Woods has kissed off the media — and through them his fans — before. No one has ever told him it's not right.

Golf depends on him. It's made him rich and world famous, and he owes the game for that. He let it down on Sunday by refusing to talk. Two minutes would have been enough. It's not a great price to pay for the position he occupies.

Seven-Minute Marketing

If you are in search of flowers, local residents will point you in his direction, saying: "Go see the hat man; his flowers are as colourful as his hats."

Spreading Your Word. Once you have determined your personal brand image, you need a strategy to broadcast it to your target audience. Visibility and persistence are critical to ensuring that your personal brand is communicated to customers. This means that you must live your personal brand at all times; if that is challenging, then you probably were not honest during the defining process and need to rethink. Here are three ways to share your personal brand with consumers:

Face-to-Face. Interactions with consumers at your store or office provide the greatest opportunities to acquaint them with your personal brand. If your customer base is too large or spread out, you can use other personal communications vehicles — including e-mail, direct mail and personalized letters — to convey your image.

China can build things. Why can't India?

Doing a Chinese style makeover would throw the country into chaos. China is experiencing the biggest mass migration in history, but trying that in India would result in big problems and civil unrest. China can politically afford to ignore the "rabble"; India doesn't have that luxury.

India will have to take longer to transform itself than China.

Weak banks, carmakers end European scrips rally

European stocks dipped in early trade on Friday, falling for the first time in five sessions as banking shares slipped on renewed worries over the global credit crunch.

Geopolitical concerns following the assassination of Pakistani opposition leader Benazir Bhutto also dampened the mood in equity markets around the world.

Europes benchmark index is up 1.4 percent on the year, on track to record its worst annual performance since 2002.

HSBC was down 0.9 percent, HBOS down one percent and Credit Suisse down 0.5 percent.

Banking shares have been hit in recent months by a squeeze in the global credit market, and investors fear that financial institutions have not yet unveiled the full impact of the debacle in the U.S. subprime mortgage market on their books.

Rose blooms again in Waterhouse

MICHAEL Rose has fond memories of growing up in Waterhouse, the second child of a 'litter' born to working-class parents. It's where he started a career that has made him one of roots-reggae's acclaimed singers.

Last year, the 50-year-old Rose went back to his hometown to work with producers Lloyd 'John John' James and DeMarco at the famed King Jammys studio. The result is the soon-to-be-released album, Michael Rose Returns to Kingston 11.

Already, the collaboration has borne fruit with the song Shootout (featuring Damian 'Jr Gong' Marley) becoming a popular club and radio hit. It is the first time in almost 20 years that Rose has made local charts.

"This jus' show people sey things still can gwaan wid the elders. Look pon Sly and Robbie, dem a elders and still a mek some great beats," Rose told The Gleaner last week.

Indy – The Tease Begins

This May sees the release of Indy IV or, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull to give it its full, hoarding-filling name.

And you thought Quantum of Solace was a mouthful?

With the whip-cracking adventurer making his way back to the big screen, the revealing of the first snippets was only a matter of time... And it was 2pm yesterday to be precise. After a quick premiere on American breakfast TV, the trailer went live on the internet.

Things start with a quick recap on Indy's previous adventures before the (much older) Jones comes into view. With the sun behind him, that hat goes on, that familiar silhouette is cast... and then THAT music kicks in. Brilliant.

After that it gets frantic. The whip is clearly in evidence, Shia LaBeouf looks like he's going to be busy as, we assume, a young Indy protoge, and Cate Blanchett looks suitably icy as the villainess.

TiVo judgment is fascinating, yet frightening

General Patents Linux

Ok, I know most people would not consider a 37-page legal opinion "fascinating". But as a computer science major and armchair software patent quarterback (not to mention long-time TiVo fan), that's exactly how I'd describe today's written decision by the US Court of Appeals in which they ruled that EchoStar (Dish Network) infringes on TiVo's "time-warp" patent. I mean, how can you not appreciate passages like this one, which delves into one of life's great mysteries: is the word "an" singular or plural?

As a general rule, the words “a" or “an" in a patent claim carry the meaning of “one or more." That is particularly true when those words are used in combination with the open-ended antecedent “comprising." However, the question whether “a" or “an" is treated as singular or plural depends heavily on the context of its use.
